According to the Brain Injury Association of America, 1.4 million people sustain a Traumatic Brain Injury in the United States every year, of which 50,000 die, 235,000 are hospitalized and 1.1 million are treated and released from an emergency room. To put that number in perspective, the American Cancer Society estimates that in 2009 there were 1.5 million new cancer cases. But with cancer you can be “cured.” With TBI, you are never fully cured. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimates that at least 5.3 million Americans need long-term or life-long need help performing activities of daily living as a result of TBI.
